I was browsing the Library of Congress website
and came across these photos of unknown soldiers, which gave me pause. One of the questions about women soldiers is how many served without ever being discovered. Are these photos of some of those women? What do you think?
In the first photo, the soldier on the left looks very feminine.
Notice the slight frame, baggy uniform, sloping shoulders, and facial features. These two could perhaps be a couple. I am leaning towards this soldier being a woman in disguise.
The jury is still out about the soldier in the next photo. The hands are slender,
but so are the rest of the features. The eyebrows are thin and arched.
If this is indeed a woman, she exudes bravado with that pose!
And here's one more. Again, this soldier is slender with arched, thin eyebrows, and possesses feminine facial features.
Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of women disguised themselves as men and served in the Civil War. I present research, both previously published along with new discoveries, to document the lives and trials of these extraordinary women.
