I present research, both previously published along with new discoveries, to document the lives and trials of these extraordinary women.

The Viking grave dated back to the 10th century and was originally excavated in 1878. Scientists believed the individual was a male due to the array of weapons included in the grave.....at least until 2017 when researchers reanalyzed the remains and determined that the individual was actually a woman.

Read more »Shelby Harriel - Hidlebaughhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02630181294674679626noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5984544350756511230.post-39833318940255046302023-05-30T15:45:00.005-05:002023-05-30T15:45:46.052-05:00A Woman Soldier Killed at the Battle of Big Black River Bridge - Video
The 160th anniversary of the Battle of Big Black River slipped past me! Sherman's squadron just north of Vicksburg in an early attempt to capture the important river city. It was a dismal failure for the Federals. Among Sherman's soldiers was Almeda Hart. She was disguised as "James Strong" so that she could accompany her husband, Henry, in the 127th Illinois Infantry. Here is a short video I made showing viewers where Almeda an Henry landed and the area where she was riding as she delivered messages during the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou for David Stuart's brigade of Morgan Smith's division. You can read more about Almeda and other women soldiers in my book Behind the Rifle: Women Soldiers in Civil War Mississippi. Also, if you attend my presentations, I open with a reading of the letter Almeda sent to her mother.

Shelby Harriel - Hidlebaughhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02630181294674679626noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5984544350756511230.post-47557354201616313572022-10-16T12:23:00.000-05:002022-10-16T12:23:36.312-05:00J.R.R. Tolkien's Warrior Woman: Éowyn - Part 7 - And They Lived Happily Ever AfterIn previous articles in this series, I introduced Éowyn, discussed possible historical and mythological women who may have influenced Tolkien to create her, her background, motivational factors that led her to ride to war disguised as "Dernhelm," and her experiences on the battlefield. I also provided historical context for her character by illustrating how she relates to women soldiers of the Civil War.

In this final installment, I am going to conclude Éowyn's story along with other women soldiers I have previously discussed.
William Henry Austin of the 109th New York Infantry. He knew Rosetta Wakeman from back home and mentioned that he encountered her at Soldiers Rest in Alexandria, Virginia. What is interesting is that at the time, she was serving as Pvt. Lyons Wakeman in the 153rd New York Infantry and sported an "insipid moustache." Despite the disguise, Austin nevertheless recognized her. In this post, I wanted to share images and information of Soldiers Rest where he encountered her prior to the 153rd New York's assignment to the western theater where Wakeman and her regiment participated in the ill-fated Red River Campaign. Rosetta ultimately would not live to see the end of the war as she succumbed to dysentery in June 1864.

Rosetta Wakeman sans "insipid moustache"

Read more »Shelby Harriel - Hidlebaughhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02630181294674679626noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5984544350756511230.post-73239013692499684962022-08-19T16:25:00.000-05:002022-08-19T16:25:07.580-05:00The Paperback Version of My Book Released Earlier
I got my author's copies of the paperback version of my book in the mail today. William Henry Austin of the 109th New York Infantry. He was a childhood friend of Rosetta Wakeman and was a bit surprised to see her in the uniform of a soldier when her regiment, the 153rd New York Infantry, was passing through Alexandria, Virginia. Austin says her unit was bound for Texas, but they ended up in Louisiana and participated in the ill-fated Red River Campaign. What I found especially intriguing about Austin's letter is the fact that he observed that she sported "an insipid moustache, highly colored."

Read more »Shelby Harriel - Hidlebaughhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02630181294674679626noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5984544350756511230.post-79861326594110661172022-08-04T12:09:00.006-05:002023-03-27T12:07:57.639-05:00Finding Jennie Jenkins: Minnesota's Woman Soldier Who Wasn't
The amazing account of Pvt. Jennie Jenkins has been documented previously in secondary sources. Apparently, she enlisted openly as a woman in the Butternut Valley Guards. This was in 1862, and I began to wonder if this is the first instance of a female serving under her true identity as a documented soldier in the ranks in our country's history.

This article will detail my adventure in researching Jennie Jenkins, which will serve as another installment in my Finding series. Other women soldiers I have previously included in the series include Elizabeth Quinn (Frances Hook), "William Bradley," and Sophronia Hunt Smith.
Read more »Shelby Harriel - Hidlebaughhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02630181294674679626noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5984544350756511230.post-14396139208922939902022-04-29T10:18:00.003-05:002022-05-10T10:14:29.236-05:00My Book Will Be Released in Paperback Form Ths Fall
My publisher has announced that my book, Behind the Rifle, Women Soldiers in Civil War Mississippi, will be offered in paperback form beginning this fall. Tolkiens' Warrior Woman: Éowyn - Part 6 - Men's Reactions to Women Serving as Soldiers

Previously in my series analyzing Éowyn in J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings in light of historical counterparts, I discussed the experiences of women soldiers. Click [HERE] for that post. In this part, I will share a few examples of how men reacted to women fighting on a battlefield.

Victorian women went to great lengths to disguise themselves in order to serve in the military, an endeavor that was off limits to them. They cut their hair short in order to assume a male appearance They enlisted under male names. And they imitated male mannerisms as well as engaged in masculine interests in order to fit in with their male comrades. Yet, despite the care some of these women put into developing and maintaining their disguise, many nevertheless fell victims to the poor fortunes of war — along with other means — which exposed
their true identities. Men privy to this revelation
always exhibited some sort of reaction, which varied Some were
sympathetic. Some were complimentary. Yet others did not hesitate to
voice their opposition to women stepping outside their traditional
gender roles and serving on the battlefield.

Read more »Shelby Harriel - Hidlebaughhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02630181294674679626noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5984544350756511230.post-62613330676743444462021-09-04T15:41:00.000-05:002021-09-04T15:41:51.594-05:00Poem: She, Too, Wore the Gray by Allen Baswell
A few years ago, I gave a presentation at the library in Louisville, Mississippi. One of the attendees who braved the storms that day was a gentleman named Allen Baswell. He is a writer and poet, and he recently composed a piece about a fictional woman soldier. Thank you, Mr. Baswell, for using your gift to honor these extraordinary women. I was delighted that he shared his work with me and that he gave me permission to share it with you. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

She,

Among the unconventional roles they assumed in the absence of their male loved ones included managing farms and hunting for food. In addition to these undertakings which provided for their families, they also formed home guard units in order to protect them. I mentioned a couple of these in my book, Behind the Rifle. One unit existed in Chickasaw County, Mississippi:

<td
